Latest news – February 2021

The last Murray–Darling Basin Ministerial Council was on Friday 27 November to discuss basin business. Ministers noted there had been good winter and spring rainfall, leading to a positive turnaround in water availability in the basin, a good season for winter crops and strong planting for summer crops. They also noted the Bureau of Meteorology’s outlook until February 2021 is for wetter than average conditions. The council discussed progress on the Murray–Darling Community Investment Package, which is focused on recovering water through off-farm projects instead of water buy-backs. Ministers also agreed to more detailed six-monthly reporting on the socio-economic assessments for the Commonwealth’s Water Efficiency Program. However, agreement could not be reached on a pathway to achieving the supply and constraints projects that would offset water recovery targets by 605GL. This related to flexibility and the timeframe to progress the projects. Both NSW and Victoria released a separate media release about this matter. You can find links to the media releases below.
